Altmuehl Cycle Path
The Classic in Altmuehl Valley
The river Altmühl flows so slowly that it first turns several times in its bed before it continues to flow, as the folk saying goes. Dedicated cycle paths and paved forest and field paths make cycling a real pleasure. Rothenburg and Regensburg are well-preserved medieval towns. On this tour you will explore the wonderful Altmühl valley with plenty of time and sail through the Danube breakthrough. In category A, the transfer back to the starting point is already included

2nd Day: Rothenburg – Ansbach, approx. 50 km
You start in the Taubertal and it doesn’t take long until you reach the Altmühl. A nice alternative is the route via the nearby Altmühl spring (approx. 10 km longer). Past the Zollernburg in Colmberg you head to Herrieden or Ansbach.
3rd Day: Ansbach – Wettelsheim / Treuchtlingen, approx. 60-65 km
Today you cross the former border of the Roman Empire, the Limes, and arrive at your destination in a leisurely ride through the Franconian Lake District – either Weißenburg, which houses the largest Roman treasure find in Germany, the tranquil Wettelsheim or to Treuchtlingen with its thermal spa.
4th Day: Wettelsheim – Eichstätt/Wasserzell, approx. 50 km
On today’s stage the valley becomes narrower and the river Altmühl cuts deep into the Jurassic rock. The 12 Apostels, an impressive rock formation, are a marvellous sight. Again and again you will cycle past mighty castles on your journey to Eichstätt, a former bishop city characterised by charming Baroque buildings.
5th Day: Eichstätt – Beilngries, approx. 45 km
In Eichstätt take the opportunity before you leave to visit the Jura museum, which has lots of fossils of dinosaurs from the area. Your cycle tour today takes you through a juniper heath in Altmühltal valley to your destination, the charming town of Beilngries.
6th Day: Beilngries – Bad Gögging/ Kelheim, ca. 45-60 km + ship ride
From Dietfurt, you follow the Altmühl in the bed of the Main-Danube canal and soon reach Prunn Castle, which towers majestically over the river. In Kelheim you reach the end of today‘s section – which is also the end of the Altmühl. From here it flows into the Danube. If your legs aren‘t wobbling too much, go and visit the Hall of Liberation, which offers great views of the area. If you spend the night in Abensberg or Bad Gögging, you will travel through the beautiful Danube Gorge by boat before reaching your destination.
7th Day: Bad Gögging – Regensburg, approx. 40-55 km + boat trip
If you have not yet taken the boat trip to Weltenburg Monastery and the impressive Danube Gorge, you have the opportunity to do so today. The oldest monastery in Bavaria is beautifully situated on a loop of the Danube. It awaits its guests with home-brewed beer in the large beer garden. You travel along the Danube to Regensburg. Regensburg’s old town, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a wonderful place to take a walk and always discover something new. Filled with modern flair and lively city life, your stay in Regensburg will be unforgettable
