Highlights of Tuscany

There is much to look forward to on this Sail & Bike tour through Tuscany, as you cycle in the footsteps of the Etruscans, enjoying the Italian ‘dolce vita’! The cypress, vineyards, and olive trees that cover the rolling hills characterize the typical Tuscan landscape. Picturesque medieval towns with small, cobbled streets and colourful houses invite curious visitors to linger. Sandy beaches and remoted bays beckon for a swim in the glistening water. The Atlantis as our floating home for the week allows for a carefree travel experience, sailing with us from one place to the next. Her giant sails create a true seafaring ambience. Tuscany by Sail & Bike is the perfect allround holiday for bike lovers.

Dates:
Aug 23./30., Sept 06./13./20./27., Oct 04.

Min.number of participants: 16 persons

1st Day: Arrival in Porto Santo Stefano (Embarkation)

Individual arrival in Porto St. Stefano, a wonderful, lively harbour town on the northern side of the Monte Argentario peninsula. The boat is ready to be boarded at 6 pm. Should you arrive earlier, you are welcome to leave your luggage on board from 2 pm onwards. A short stroll through the medieval old town, painted in a wash of pink and beige, will quickly make you realize that you are now on holiday! We recommend a walk to the Fortezza Spagnola on the hill above the old town, built in the 17th century to protect the city. The first evening meal on board is a great way to get to know your fellow travellers, guides, and crew. Overnight in Porto St. Stefano.

2nd Day: Monte Argentario – Talamone (aprx. 25 mi./40 km, 660 ft./200 m of elevation)

Our first bike tour takes us from Porto St. Stefano to the historic town of Orbetello. With a little bit of luck, we will have the chance to admire the spectacular flamboyance of flamingos in the WWF natural oasis Laguna di Orbetello. Afterwards our cycle tour leads to the ruins of the fortified Roman town of Cosa and then through the Duna Feniglia nature reserve, with its enchantingly beautiful pine forest. The tour continues predominantly along cycle paths back to Porto Santo Stefano where the Atlantis awaits our arrival for a crossing to Talamone.

3rd Day: Talamone – Magliano di Toskana –Talamone (aprx. 28 mi./45 km, 1,000 ft./300 m of elevation)

After breakfast we start the day’s tour cycling through rolling hills characterized by vineyards and olive groves. After passing the Poggio Perotto Lake we arrive in the medieval town of Magliano di Toskana. The picturesque town with its striking city gates and city walls invites its visitors to linger. We can appreciate the Tuscan landscape from its most beautiful side as we cycle back to Talamone Bay, a kite- and windsurfers paradise. Before dinner on board the ship, Islandhopping invites you to a tasting of delectable, local Tuscan wines.

4th Day: Talamone – Porto Azzuro (aprx. 12.5 mi./20 km, 660 ft./200 m of elevation)

The morning is spent sailing to Elba. Along the way you can get an introduction to sailing in favourable winds and help sail the ship. Elba is the third largest island in Italy after Sicily and Sardinia and impresses with its charm, lush nature, and rich history. After a light lunch on board, we go ashore. The afternoon tour leads along a spectacular panoramic road across the island to Capoliveri. In the evening, there is plenty of time to visit the charming harbour town of Porto Azzuro.

5th Day: Porto Azzuro –Enfola Bay (aprx. 21.9 mi./35 km, 1,630 ft./500 m of elevation)

Today we can look forward to a somewhat longer tour from Porto Azzuro to the north of the island of Elba. After a coffee break in Rio nell’ Elba we head to one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the trip. From Voltereio we can look out over the beautiful bay of Portoferreio, the capital of the island. After lunch, we cycle the last few kilometres to the bay of Enfola.

6th Day: Patresi – Marina di Campo (aprx. 19 mi./30 km, 2,300 ft./700 m of elevation)

Today the queen’s stage awaits us! We cycle over the island, visiting the mountain village of Marciana along the way before reaching the highest point of the tour at Monte Perone. From here we are rewarded with a wonderful decent to the village of San Piero in Campo, where we can enjoy a delicious lunch with a view of our ship. Once back on the ship there is plenty of time for a refreshing swim directly from the boat. Afterwards, the sails are set, and we head for Isola Giglio, an island located in the very south of the Tuscan Archipelago. This Italian jewel is home to mountains, forest, untouched nature, and crystal-clear sea!

7th Day: Island Giglio – Porto St. Stefano (aprx. 9.4 mi./15 km, 1,650 ft./500 m of ele-vation)

We begin our cycling tour in Campese on the west of the island. The destination for today is the medieval town of Giglio Castello, enthroned like an impregnable castle high up on the island of Giglio. A quick descent takes us down to Giglio Porto. Enjoy the last cruise on board the Atlantis as we set sail in the direction of Porto St. Stefano. A celebratory evening meal in the company of fellow travellers, crew, and guides offers a great atmosphere in which to enjoy the last evening together reminiscing about the week.

8th Day: Porto St. Stefano (Disembarkation)

Departure at 9 am after breakfast followed either by an extended stay in Tuscany or an individual journey home.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION:

YOUR ShiP – Tallship-three-masted barque ATLANTIS

At 57 x 7.5 m and with 14 sails the Atlantis is an eye catcher in any harbour. Built in 1905 and chris-tened Elbe 2, the Atlantis served faithfully as a light vessel in the North Sea, Germany. In 2005, she was renovated as a tall ship for passenger cruises. The renovation features a classy salon, a spa-cious upper deck with seats and a cocktail bar as well as 17 comfortable, air-conditioned guest cabins with a shower and WC.

General information:
Group riding pace
On most of our Bike & Boat tours you can choose between a hybrid bike and an e-bike. However, the guided group pace is based on the speed of the hybrid bike cyclists. Those who rent an e-bike on a hybrid bike tour are asked to show consideration for those who ride without electronic assistance. Hybrid bike cyclists need more breaks and more time to cycle the hills. We thank you for your understanding.
Children
We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 as well as previous bicycle tour experience would be able to master the cycle tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1.50 m (5ft.).
Specials features at harbours and while dropping anchor
Our tall ship is too large to dock in many of the small fishing harbours we visit and therefore spends most nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy must be used to get to land. Surefooted-ness, balance, and a certain degree of agility are therefore required to get on and off the boat. Needless to say, our tour guides are always happy to lend a helping hand. It is also important to remember that in general, wind, swell, and tidal changes have significant influences on tours by tall ship.
Good to know
Please bring your personal belongings in soft, foldable travel bags, not hard cases. They will be too heavy to store in your cabin.
Payment on Board: cash only
